The big highlight is the very spacey The Other One which follows Space – it opens with a Spanish Jam and then some seriously out there riffing, offering the home crowd a risky and rewarding exploration. This Truckin’ is basically just the song with little true jamming, but it’s a good effort and definitely more engaged than the playing in the first set. After a typically schmaltzy Looks Like Rain, the boys blister Crazy Fingers, and they throw in a well done ending jam into Truckin’ to boot. (Yeah, I know Jerry totally wrecks the lyrics – I’m going to key in on the great playing instead). At this point, I was ready to write this show’s obituary.īut the second set opens with a very energetic China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider and really doesn’t let up from there. Bob Weir’s slide guitar efforts on Little Red Rooster are reminiscent of some of his worst work from the late 70’s and The Music Never Stopped doesn’t go anywhere.

There’s really not all that much to report about the first set – it’s short, there aren’t a lot of great songs on the setlist, and nothing seems to be really clicking. Listen to the River: St.Here is a good example of a Grateful Dead show where you can get lulled into thinking that the whole night is going to be blase based on the lackluster first set, only to be pleasantly surprised when the band comes roaring out for an inspired effort in the second half of the show. The final Grateful Dead performance of the song was in July 1995. It then disappeared again until February 1979 when it returned to a regular position in the repertoire. After the group hiatus in 1975 China Cat did not return to the repertoire until December 1977 for a single outing. From then on it was played regularly through to October 1974. It's good that a few things in this world are clear to all of us.Ĭhina Cat Sunflower was first performed by the Grateful Dead in January 1968. People seem to know exactly what I'm talking about. In his book of lyrics, Box Of Rain Hunter's comment for China Cat Sunflower is Nobody ever asked me the meaning of this song. I'd have to admit that - before you could trace it back. I liked the idea of quick, clicky assonance and alliteration like 'See me dance the polka, said My Wag, like a bear, with my top hat and my whiskers, that tra-la-la trapped affair.' I just liked the way she put things together. It was originally inspired by Dame Edith Sitwell, who had a way with words. In an interview, with Blair Jackson, Hunter commented on the writing of the song I wrote it in different settings and added this and that to it. I wrote Alligator and China Cat Sunflower, and I knew they had a rock 'n' roll band so I mailed them up. He spoke about sending the lyrics to the group in an interview: I moved out to New Mexico to be an artist about the time the Dead really started. China Cat Sunflower was one of the first two lyrics provided by Robert Hunter for the Dead.
